DISC DOG RESCUE

Anyone can go out and buy a cute little puppy. It takes someone REALLY special to rescue, foster, or adopt that puppy after it has been abandoned.

There are some very dedicated people out there doing lots of excellent work in rescuing these dogs and getting them into good homes. If you already have a dog PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE have them spayed or neutered!

If you're looking for a dog - PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE consider a rescue dog! - You won't be sorry! BOTH of the dogs that inspired this club are rescues, and the majority of dogs in this sport nationwide are too!

We've just found out about a great group operating here in the state - Aussie Rescue & Placement Helpline The West Virginia Folks call themselves the Canine Underground Railroad, and could use help in finding permanent homes, transportation of dogs around the state, and especially, if not most importantly, foster homes (take it from us - it's FANTASTIC and REWARDING!)

Officially, our group has assisted with several rescues, including Rebecca, a chocolate lab that was adopted by Mark and Danielle Blair. She is an older dog, and was overweight when they took her in. Today, she is slim, trim, happy, and beautiful! She loves being part of the family, and as soon as Mark sends us some pictures of Casey and 'Becca - along with their newest addition (surprise! They have a baby boy now too!) we'll post them!

HAPPY TRAILS! THE ADVENTURES OF RINGO - THE COWBOY DOG!

Most recently, we rescued Cowboy, a 2 yr. old Australian Shepherd. We learned about Cowboy from the Purina Incredible Dog Team (Lawrence Frederick and Donna Schoech), who were performing at the WV State Fair! This beautiful dog had been dumped in the countryside, and was taken in by a family that owned a cattle farm. Building a house and raising 2 young children didn't leave much time to work with him, and after seeing the 'frisbee dogs' in action, they asked Lawrence if he wanted this dog. Lawrence let us know when we came to watch the show (INCREDIBLE!), and a few days later, we were driving 4.5 hours to go get him! He was the hit of the Charleston Skyhoundz contest, and everyone who met him fell in love with him - he's VERY SWEET!

Cowboy was fostered by us for a week, and during that time learned numerous commands, and raised his rating in the basic retreival test from a 0 to a 4! He is a GREAT dog!

Cowboy was adopted by Dan and Mary Hayes - who have a VERY interesting involvement with dog frisbee - Dan's best man at their wedding was Taylor Runner!

With Dan's help, Ringo - the Cowboy dog, as he is now known, is well onto his way to becoming a 'real' cattle dog, as he's being put in charge of a small herd on their farm! We plan on following his progress in this area, and of course in Frisbee, and we'll report back on his progress from time to time - stay tuned!

Here are some more links to some great resuce/adoption sites we've found - but one place to always check first is the local shelter - that's where most rescue groups find the dogs they have in the first place!

Monongalia County Canine Adoption Center - this is the new animal shelter in the Morgantown WV area, that was opened in 2002, and was listed as #40 in the 2003 list of the 100 best things about Morgantown/Mon County!

Glen Highland Farm - Located in upstate NY, this is a fantastic place, and one we hope to visit for ourselves sometime soon! They have a fantastic mission, great rescue dogs, and would make a fun vacation spot for the whole family!

Blue Ridge Border Collie Rescue - This group operates in Western VA and the WV eastern panhandle, so they are conveniently located for all your border collie resuce needs!

If you'd like us to help you find a potential frisbee dog for you, we'll be glad to help out! A couple of good places to start are the animal shelter and Animal Friends of West Virginia - a great rescue group around Morgantown. Most of the disc dog sites we provide links to also have national and regional rescue links as well!
